55 - 57 Chevy Car Gasser Sub Frame

Hot Rod Sub Frames

Our Straight Axle Gasser front suspension is now available as a replacement subframe for any tri-five Chevy with a stock chassis or as a universal kit for any car or pickup. This complete easy-to-graft subframe will raise the nose of your tri-five and make it look like its was right out of the Sixties coming off the line. The rear-steer leaf-spring suspension includes everything you'll need to install it into a stock 115-inch wheel-base tri-five frame. The straight axle assembly is complete with tube axle (any width), leaf springs (rated at 2500 lbs. for the pair) with front shackles and rear frame brackets, shocks with frame mount brackets, new early Ford spindles with bolt-on Super Bell 2-inch dropped steering arms, new cross-steer Vega steering box with 2-inch dropped Pitman arm and cross-steer drag link and tie-rod. It features Wilwood 4-piston calipers with 10-3/4-inch rotors with a 5-on-4-3/4 wheel bolt-pattern to fit inside nostalgic 15-inch wheels. We include special box tube grafting sections to install the new suspension to the stock chassis that will be cut at the first body mount, just in front of the firewall. We offer steering linkage hook-up kits, new ididit steering columns, and disc-drum brake kits that plumb into your existing brake system. Any of our parts are available separately. Ask about our rear tri-five Gasser Ladder-Bar subframe without all the Sixties ladder-bar binding problems.

Looking at the left spindle, the ends of the straight-axle kit feature new Super Bell spindles and bolt-on 2-inch-dropped steering arms, while Wilwood aluminum 4-piston calipers mounting bracket that attaches to the spindle bolt-pattern. If you don't have a dual chamber master cylinder and are still on a drum/drum stock brake system, no problem. Jim Meyer offers a dual chamber M/C kit that will bolt in place of the stock M/C and connect into your existing brake line system. It is complete with proportioning valve, plug for the stock front-to-rear “T”, and a union to connect to the original rear brake line.

The front leaf springs mount to the straight axle in the conventional fashion using U-bolts, a steel axle-cradle on top of the main leaf and a bottom plate that includes the lower shock mount. The 2-inch diameter X ¼-inch wall axle is standard in track-widths of 56, 58 and 60-inches (any width available), while the pair of 27-inch long springs (eye-to-eye) are rated at 2500 lbs. We have left the cradle loose from the axle, allowing you to position the axle over or under the spring.

Looking at the right spindle, the Super Bell 2-inch drop steering arm feature two holes in the steering arm. One is for the cross-steering Drag Link and the other is for the tie-rod to the left spindle steering arm. The removable steering arms bolt to the two lower holes (from the inside) of the 4-bolt spindle pattern. All items are new, current reproduction replaceable parts.

We include special box tube grafting sections to install the new suspension to the stock chassis that will be cut just in front of the firewall.

Our Straight Axle Gasser front suspension does require welding on the chassis. The upper shock-mount bracket, two chassis mounting points for the front spring, the Vega steering-box bracket and the grafting sections all require welding. Since the Vega steering box has a splined input-shaft, just like rack-and-pinion steering, you will need to modify the lower end of your stock steering column or replace it with a new ididit™ or Flaming River column to connect to the splined worm-gear on the Vega box. Cross-Steer Rack-and-Pinion steering is also available as an option. It bolts to the same Vega steering box flange.
